HTW Tile Backer Boards Free From Banned Substances
Recent reports have shown that some tile backer boards could contain substances which are banned in Europe. An article from The Tile Association says that “a range of Chinese manufactured tile backer boards and wetroom shower trays are under investigation by the Environment Agency for being manufactured using banned substances.”
The substances found in the tile backer boards are a result of the manufacturing process; a gas or blowing agent is injected into the molten polymer to create the honeycomb-shaped bubbles in the extruded material. Most manufacturers have begun using CO2 as the blowing agent, however some are still using the banned HCFC, which is known to have ozone-depleting effects.
At Hampshire Tile Warehouse, all of the tile backer boards we stock from manufacturers Orbry & Marmox are free from banned substances like HCFC, Bromine & Fluorine.
